Not to defend Iran, but to be neutral. China and India are also helping Russia buying their goods, this doesn’t mean that we should try to be in good therms with them.
With the JCPOA treaty, we were building a good relationship with Iran, until the US pulled out for no reason in 2018 and the vassalized EU followed shortly.
